Diets can be great. Really, they can. The reason most people detest dieting is because of attitude. Years of conditioning has created a mental barrier that says, “Every diet I have ever tried has always failed, so why would this work?” And guess what? The sustainable lifestyle changes that catalyze weight loss are rarely given an opportunity to blossom. Businesses aren’t any different; after a period of sluggishness and complacency, a business should go on a diet – a Lean Diet. For both, the optimal result is a lifestyle change that sustains health and strength.
The Lean Diet is a process characterized by upgrading two things: tools and behaviors. The tools, lean principles, are simple to implement. Companies that use lean tools in isolation, however, find that their addition is not maximized without a leadership-led cultural change. Think about it in different terms: Humans on a diet use many tools – Diet Coke, treadmills, bikes, weights, whole wheat – but without the right lifestyle changes – making time for exercise choosing to eat less fast food, rearranging schedules to get more sleep – there is no platform by which the tools become a part of every day life. When the new behaviors of the diet become a habit, then the diet is complete and the new lifestyle has begun.
