Lean Certification Class Saves $10.5 Million
April 5, 2011
Definity University's latest Lean Certification class set a record for savings achieved through student projects. The six class members from six different companies delivered project results totaling $10.5 million dollars in cost savings.
The largest single result was achieved by Angela French of Pilot Chemical. She used Lean problem solving techniques to identify the root cause of an issue that was causing millions of dollars of product to fail during the production process. After identifying the problem, French was able to solve it by standardizing the correct production process. The result was a verified savings of six million dollars per year.
The six companies sending students to the class were The Wornick Company, Pilot Chemical, Myers Industries, Dayton Superior, Hohman Plating & Manufacturing and Trinity Rail. All had sent students to previous classes and saw the value of providing Definity Lean Certification training to additional members of the workforce.
The Definity University program began with a week of intensive classroom instruction covering Lean tools and principles. Students then selected a project at their companies and returned to their operation to apply what they had learned. Students were mentored in the project phase by a Definity Partners project manager who monitored progress, made suggestions, and helped trouble shoot problems.
"Each and every student commented about how much they learned in the field with the feedback and assistance of a mentor," said Tara Amis, Education Coordinator for Definity University.
Definity University's program is distinguished from other Lean education offering by its field study and mentoring. Definity University guarantees its graduates will save their companies at least twice the cost of the training. This latest graduating class saved between 12 and 500 times the cost of tuition.
